The secret to stay warm!!!!

It s early season in canada and the cold water make for a challenging training environment. These are my best strategy to stay warm as long as possible!

1. Driving to swim practice, wear lots of clothes, tuque, big sweater, long pants, heated seat ON in the car, etc. You are stocking warm in you.....make sure you arrive toasty at swim practice!

2. Drink a hot drink prior to swimming. A hot coffee/tea, hot chocolate, pick your favorite but once again, make sure you get yourself very warm prior to starting the session.

3. Wetsuit, this one is obvious.... make sure it fit and doesn't let too much water in... Peeing in your suit is normal/recommended and socially acceptable, everyone does it, be proud of it and get yourself toasty or stay clean and miserable ;)

4. Double your swim cap.....While it s very nice to own a neoprene swim cap, they can be expensive and there is way around this; use 2 swim caps one on top of each other.... it simple, cheap and it works! thick latex swim cap are even better!

5. Cover your feet. Either use the technical booty for swimming or simply get a tight pair of socks. While the second option might not be as effective, it will still keep you warmer!

6. Get to buisness. the colder the water, the harder you should swim. if you want to stay warm, make sure you are working hard!

7. If none of those tip works, go back to tip #3....are you sure you pee in your suit???jonnyohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13330566544800732453noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273635594405378631.post-8614810677739573492014-03-11T17:11:00.001-07:002014-03-11T17:11:24.897-07:00THE CATCHThis week, we have a little video that will explain a little more what the Catch really his. This is a little exercices that you can do at home and could help you greatly improve your swimming. The catch is perhaps the most important part of freestyle swimming and if you can learn to properly do it...you will make some very big progress
The 2014 season is underway and with new races, new challenges, new goals it s time to rise and reach new heights! Over the past 8 years, I have been able to dedicate a limited amount of time to coaching. That mean keeping a very small group of select athlete with who I kept a very tight athlete/coach relationship.

This year, I m excited to have more time allocated to coaching and can open a few more spot for driven and motivated individuals that want to pursuit there dream and get faster!

If you want to discuss in more details about the coaching options available, drop me a line and we can start the conversation.

best of luck in 2014 and GTWDjonnyohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13330566544800732453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273635594405378631.post-26506196658600737912011-04-11T21:09:00.000-07:002014-02-27T23:28:32.623-08:00Amazing blog from Jeff Symonds<span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(204, 204, 204); People are all lock inside, having dinner and relaxing after there long hard day of work. But it s not relaxing time for everyone

I m heading out for a routine z2 run in the cold air and venture on my usual Subaru loops that consist in many little dark alley and quiet street all the way to the subaru dealership where i can dream of my next purchase.

But tonight wasnt a routine night and what was about to happen was about the change everything. As i was settling peacefully in my rythme, feet touching the ground and bouncing quickly, nice form and moving along well, i heard some step behind me...... a quick look behind me confirm my suspicion, another runner was closing in. Now, this might seems normal for most but i have to be honest, in all those year training and running in penticton, i have perhaps once or twice been pass by a runner. But this time, in a dark cold night, someone was moving in.......

I took a quick turn on the channel, the darkest path in the night. A path so dark that only a experience channel runner can manage at this the lightness of the night. The runner behind me took the same turn....... I M HUNTED..... it s clear...who the hell is running behind me and catching me;

quickly in my mind, the check list happen

Olly piggon; no freaking way, the guy is at home drinking coke and watching cable illegaly.

Tom Evans: nop...one thing is for sure, tom lives in the Eastern part of town and never venture on the west side....too dangerous for him or his dog....

That guy Wade something; ..... no ...he seems like a nice guy...he would not chase me like this.

Scott Macmillan; This was definitly one of the suspect on my list, the guy will not miss a opportunity to take a shot at me and destroy my comfidence by running me down in the darkness....he is just that kind of guy.... but no, he as a kid and should be home changing dippers ....

Dave Mathison; ???? nah...the guy is so out of shape....kind of a school nerds....

Then, it become all so clear, i was under a vicious attack from a young, mean spirit and arrogant little bastard...... Closing the gap at a impressive rate and hearing those quick footstep... it could only be Jeff Symonds....... And it was... passing me, a old veteran and not having the class to acknowledge my good running form or giving me a ‘’looking strong jonny’’ comments, he simply told me he had to do a progressive run and that the warm up was almost over........

Yep, what a cheap and sneaky attack at me it was..... Jeff trying to establish himself as the very prestigous KING of PENTICTON passed me and left me behind eating is dust....

Well, big boy.... i wont forget this evening of feburary 21th...... i will get back to you this summer on the race course.... lets meet at the oliver world champ.... and get down to buisness....

;)
jonnyohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13330566544800732453noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273635594405378631.post-81128314582543909912010-08-02T10:46:00.000-07:002014-01-30T01:28:11.930-08:00Calgary 70.3
my first finish in 14 months. Yes, 14 months of injury, sickness and dns, dnf and finaly crossing the finish line of a race!

I was pretty bag up at the end, my body was in shock as the effort was big and i put everything into this. I had a amzzing swim and up front with Kieran doe, Brian Fleshman and a few other fishy. We were 6 of us out of the water in 23minutes and i was in sock to realise later in the ride that we had over 1min lead on Jeff Symonds the pool fish and Paul ticheelar the shark.

On the bike, i did my best to put a hard ride and was doing great until km 60 where i ran low on calories, made lots of technical mistake in how i race and to be honest, i ran out of fitness........i just didnt ride as smart as i usualy was. I got drop and lost 5minutes to my peers in the last 35km as the body started to fall appart. On the run, i tried really hard to be strong mentaly and put a hard effort in it. could not get my legs back to normal but keep trucking along and avoid any falling appart until i cross the finish line.

Well, i have to say i was happy to be a finisher again. It lasted a good 2h where i was proud to make it to the finish line until i started looking at the results and realise i was 12th, 13 minutes down on the leader and was really far from the front of the race. So, yeah, not happy at all with it, but 5 months into my return to training and getting healthier, i will have to accept that it s where i m and that a few more months of training and hard work are needed to make up those 13 minutes.

thanks to everyone on the course that gived me a tumbs up and cheer for me...this include my cometitor that passed me on the bike/run and found the time to cheer my up in my fun misery! There was a good field of strong athlete and the perfect set up for a honest evaluation of my fitness.

The swim start was different than usual, i dont have my normal fitness and not start speed so i decided to start on the outside alone. I swam the first few minutes alone until i juge safe for me to re-enter the group that was string up a long way ahead of me. I could not tell how many swimmers were ahead but it was A LOT.

I settle into a very comfortable rythme and knew we were going very very slow. PErhaps the slowest swim i have ever done in a ironman since my age group times in 97! Onmy side was a annoying swimmer screaming at me and banging on me in a weird way but i could not focus on him, i had to stay focus on swimming relax and save my energy. Coming out of the water for the first loop, i was ready for the update and see how far down i was but to my suprise and shock, i was in the lead group of 6-7 swimmers and the annoying dude next to me was my training partner tom evans...oh boy... i knew this wasnt good.... well, good for me to be in the lead group but the pace was so slow that i knee some indesirable people would still be in contact and our lead out of the water would be next to nothing!

out of the water and on the bike, i proceed right away to pass tom and show him the view of my butt...the pace wasnt easy for me right front the start and i had to remaine very focus. At the 25miles mark, as the group was about 8 of us, my rear tire went flat. I right away screamed , ''WHEEEEEELLLLSSSSSS'' to the neutral support motorcycle but thhis BASTA##$ F#@$#% didnt stop. I was left on the side of the road to change my flat and wearing the number 13, everything went wrong, the spare went flat right away and i could not find any reason why....the tire and rim were clean..... I had to wait 20minutes on the side of the road for the neutral support from the woman pro race to get back on the saddles.

At this point, the day was over, rode back to transition and went back home to digest all this.

My fitness is clearly not back to where i need it. But i m back to be able to race and not look like a complete idiot....but i sure did look like a idiot on the side of the road.

that is it for now, time to go for a ride, i will bring 2 spare today....jonnyohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13330566544800732453noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273635594405378631.post-30415986724288261032010-06-20T22:00:00.000-07:002010-06-20T22:06:52.150-07:00i m still alive!!!!!!!!!! and well!!!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVDL5yW5eULr3yevsUa42ZTZTmxPM93YJQlD7_rhj-iWcoFSaGE9SAJij69bJbxW121OkS49qILfAwJCxU9NtQY4cWsNjwg60WeE7CgSQYUeO4OuQC5K9zAvY4qY-DvaxgksHmnXxcFlN5/s400/photo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485088963305643778" />
How was your day? was it a good day or a bad day....lets talk about our day!

Well, i m getting the work done and this week was my biggest week in 13 months!!!! What happen?!?! M i still alive? Retired? injured?

Well, i been extremly busy this winter. My life as change and i have lots of big responsability now. I been extremely good at jungling with all of those. To start, i have a phone now, i need to pay it once a month, answer it, check messages, check voicemails etc... lots to do...

I have a brand new car, need to drive it, refuel, clean it, drive it some more...

I do have a real job outside triathlon, i run the big show at PODIUM IMPORTS ( canadian distributor or orbea, garmin, orca etc). It s a challenging challenge as i have to take all the decisions, show up to the office often(up to 5 times a week) and i have to suppervise 2 employe that arent fluent in INGLISH. Communication are often a big challenge (kiwi bird) but i m on top of things....

So,what about triathlon. Well, i m trying to keep a low profile, doing my weekly 15-20h of training and repairing my body so i can be ready to sneak in some races in early july. I m presently very busy supervising and coaching Tom Evans on his preparation for ironman Coeur d'Alene. I will also go to CDA to supervise him and make sure he dosnt make a fool of himself.

Well, that is a small update for now, i think it s time to get some more jonny tip of the weeks, training update and serious post about everything happening in beautifull penticton. I say beautifull but it s been very cold and rainy...lake are too cold to swim in and training can be challenging on some days..... summer is coming soon!

more to come!jonnyohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13330566544800732453noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273635594405378631.post-316022004989172042010-01-25T18:27:00.000-08:002010-01-25T18:29:52.284-08:0050km skate ski race......18th overall...Sunday was my first 50km ski race in about 12 years! I havent done those hard races in a long long time. IT was nice to get a good go at it. With a few past olympian athelte in the field, it wasnt long that i was long gone and far away from the front of the race. But a lot of fun and one more step into getting the fitness back to a elite level.

here s the video summary of the day, Me, Tom and GW!

jonnyohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13330566544800732453noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273635594405378631.post-40553219305771681762010-01-20T19:55:00.000-08:002010-01-20T20:14:39.880-08:00Lets be honest here mister Tom Evansafter having to deal with people making fun of me for battling with all my heart (and my extra weight and 7 months of serious injury and low fitness) in a ski race and getting beat by some 60 year old prodigy, i would like to share with you all some of Tom Evans results,

Tom as been very good at keeping on the down low what we all remeber as BLACK Saturday in 2008,

Saturday janurary 19th 2008 started nicely with perfect condition and Tom evans had put all his energy and money in getting the top of the line HF wax and fastest ski possible to attack the 4TH REINO KESKI-SALMI LOPPET. Tom was showing some agressive sign at the start of the race but nothing would have prepare us for what was to come in the next few hours.

The race went on, and tom was shatter by the pace of Doug G...the 58 year old man coming back from cancer and tom had to let doug go..... Milaine, a recreational skier competiing in her first race ever passed tom and cheering for him on the way. Tom didnt appreciate but could simple not keep the pace with the young lady. But with in the last few minutes of the race, Tom in a no man lands noticed that a 63 year old man was shadowing him on the final approche to the finish line, The old man took the outside track ready to challenge tom in a fair and square sprint dash to the line. Tom in a vicious attack move to the outside, takling the old man and pushing him in the fence while crossing the line and screaming..... TAKE THAT GERRY!!!!!

While the official miss the vicious attack on the old men by them.,....we will never forget what really happen on BLACK SATURDAY on janurary 2008.

Here's the results......

4TH REINO KESKI-SALMI LOPPET

11 Doug Gudwer 669 BSR 1:01:39 2:05:19 1 M 50-59

12 Milaine Theriault 564 xc.c 1:01:38 2:06:08 1 F 30-39

13 Alastair Duncan 522 BSR 1:01:49 2:08:39 8 M 18-29

14 Thomas Evans 544 NP 1:04:17 2:09:18 4 M 30-39

15 Gerry Morrison 700 TEL 1:08:37 2:09:19 1 M 60-69jonnyohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13330566544800732453noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273635594405378631.post-85315069287907731592010-01-15T21:51:00.000-08:002010-01-17T16:26:48.905-08:00Tom and jonnyo race reportSki race, salmon arms, 36km classic..... it was hard, it was only my 4th time on classic ski so i m not yet ready to go fast ;) First race in 7 months...was lots of fun!

jonnyohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13330566544800732453noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273635594405378631.post-68896323285636887602010-01-14T21:01:00.000-08:002010-01-14T21:15:54.432-08:00Pinnapple Express
The train as arrive in town..... Everyone can feel it because the snow is metling and rain is pooring.... The Pinnapple express is ready to RACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, tom as call me pinnapple jonny for many years now. And the pinnnapple express is also a warm wind in the okanagan that make the snow melt and disapeer. This is what is happening this week, abnormal hot weather with rain for our winter and the snow is melting fast!

The problem, well, tomorrow night, me and tom are driving down to Salmon Arms where we will offically start the cross country season with a 36km classic race. My first race in over 7 months of injury and time off! While i have very low expectation from very little fitness and some additionnal 25lbs to my frame, it s one step toward getting back into the racing game!

Stay tune for a little video of me and tom tomorrow night in the final preparation before the first BC cup race of the season.

But for now, Tom....be warry......be ready...... Here's the thing that makes life so interesting. The theory of competition says, just because theyre the strong doesnt mean they cant get their asses kicked. Thats right. See, what every long shot, come from behind, underdog contender will tell you is this: The other guy may in fact be the favorite. The odds may be stacked against you, fair enough. But what the odds don't know is this isnt a math test! This is a completely different kind of test, one where passion has a funny way of trumping logic. So before you step up to the starting line, before the whistle blows and the clock starts ticking, just remember out here, the results dont always add up! No matter what the stats say, or what the experts may think, and the commentators may have predicted, when the race is on, ALL BETS ARE OFF. Dont be surprised if someone decides to flip the script and take a pass on yelling uncle.

.....And then, as the old saying goes, we got ourselves a RACE.

jonnyohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13330566544800732453noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273635594405378631.post-71643094668309354812009-12-31T11:46:00.000-08:002009-12-31T12:07:08.808-08:002010, Orbea!
2009, is behind now! thank you Team TBB, alex, brett and everyone on the team for everything you guys did for me, amazing experience even if the results werent there for me. Lets make a short and accurate review of the year

I got 4 triathlon in me.

-DNF ironman australia
-slow time at wildflower
-Win at the oliver olympic distance
-2nd place and bike course record at Oliver half ironman
and follow by 6 months of injury to my hip and knee

It s now the holiday season, we are coming on the new year and a few changes will come with it.

I would like to take the time to say a big thank you to Team TBB for taking me on board and supporting me this season. It s not secret that they took a risk in taking me after a lot of sickness and injury in the past year and that it asnt pay off for them. But i do have to say it as been a incredible experience to be part of the team and take part in our training camp in the philippines. The group of athlete is simply amazing, hard workers and driven individuals.

The 2 months in subic bay living with Zach and scott, and working with Brett sutton have been a lot of fun and hard work. Brett is definitly passionate about his work and it s been a pleasure to work with him. As for our manager Alex, he as had this vision of creating a team that would have a high performance dedication with also a social project attach to it. He as been working very hard at it and some amazing things have come up from it.

I have to say, i feel really lucky to be part of the team for the 2009 season.

What s next?! Well, my body as still not been giving me the green light to get back to my full routine. it s very frustrating but i do have to stick to it and keep working at it.

I will not be back with team TBB in 2010 but it dosn't mean there wont be any link with them in the future...:) some changes are obviously needed for me. I will have to face the music and be very honest with myself....there is a lot of work ahead of me....

More news on January first.................

wish you all a merry christmas!!!jonnyohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13330566544800732453noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273635594405378631.post-16533324555141268022009-11-23T17:01:00.000-08:002009-11-23T17:04:41.454-08:00congrat jordan!!!!! 8h13!!!!!!
from jordan

"it's about the process.
Mark Gingrich has left a new comment on your post "HTFU.....":

I think you are a complete douche bag Jonnyo. I think you're an idiot for posting what you did, feel extremely sorry that you felt the need to post something like this.

I could honestly care less what you think of me, my company, etc. Your post actually gave me a nice boost in web traffic. Please continue to shell out blasphemy...I love it!

Yes, we will meet soon. And yes, you will do and say absolutely nothing. You're a tiny little nobody that doesn't have anything else to do but complain and whine about things you cannot accomplish or something you think you created. You and Paulo created nothing. To say you did is a complete farce and I find it comical.

To be honest...you and the little wannabe's that were picked on in high school, have no social life, backbone, etc. will accomplish nothing and fade into oblivion having no impact on life or the sport in which you think you represent.

Best of luck. Here's to being a C level triathlete who's only accomplishment will be winning one Ironman which no real talent attended....lol.

How's that for hiding behind an anonymous tag. Fuck You! And for what it's worth bud... I'll say that too your face when I see you ;-)
Black permanent markers. Those would be certified markers that could be use to make letters HTFU on your clothing only when you really know you deserve it! Why this idea, well,

this guy, Mark Gingrich started HTFU.com. I have no problem with it. I dont necessarly agree or support it but that stop there. I just voice my opinion in a respectfull maner on slowtwitch!

Well, this Mark guy, under a anonymous name of HTFU.com came to slowtwitch to insult me and call me name. That show class, guts, and confidence to do such thing. Well, he also said he would sued everyone that call him by his name and bla bla bal. Well, i m canadian and there is no law suit in canada... so

Mark Gingrich, we will meet at some races...should be fun! You could have simply in a respectfull maner disagree with me and go on your venture and persue..but you went ahead and had to insult, and try to bring someone down under anonymous name..

Now, you want to bet i can sell more markers than you sell HTFU clothing? ;)

I think i could sell those for about 10$ + shipping. My cost is about 4$...so 6$ of profit on each..... all the profit will go to something like maybe getting one more bike in jordan's charity mission or something else that would be good!

Now, what is so awesome about my system is, you can make, blue HTFU using the blue marker, you can make green one using the green marker or red one using the ....well, you get the point! You can probably make 100 shirt or 1000 visor!

ok....go!jonnyohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13330566544800732453noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273635594405378631.post-61068567068456940392009-10-20T23:54:00.000-07:002009-10-21T00:06:32.372-07:00my world is upside down............Yes, my world is a bit up side down...but there is a lot more to come!
